Campaign Overview

The Goal

The goal of this Pay it Forward “50 Million Steps” Campaign is to simply encourage as many people as possible to take 50 million steps and improve their fitness level by walking. In particular, the goal is to challenge each person to take at least 10,000 steps a day, that’s just about walking five miles. 10,000 steps a day is recommended to achieve the health benefits associated with walking. Once each person begins to form a habit of walking they are encouraged to pass this habit on to someone else.

The Foundation

The foundation of the “50 Million Steps” Campaign is set on you reaching your daily walking requirement and energy expenditure goals. By referring to your heart rate monitor and pedometer throughout the day you will know if you are on track. If you’re not on track then you need to get moving. This is where the accountability factor comes in. You are accountable for meeting your daily exercise and energy expenditure goals.

The Tools

A walking program should always rely on the use of tools that monitors activities and provide feedback. This “50 Million Steps” campaign relies on the use of a pedometer, a heart rate monitor and the Internet as tool for success. In particular the campaign relies on the use of any pedometer, the Polar F11 Heart Rate monitor, LiveWisely 2020 (www.livewisely2020.org/community), Twitter (www.twitter.com/livewisely2020) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/livewisely2020) as excellent tools that allows participants to easily monitor their activities and follow up with each other during the day. They are proven motivational tools.

The Polar F11 Heart Rate Monitor measures your heart rate, tracks your caloric expenditure, measures your current fitness level and provides a complete guidance and feedback on your progress. The pedometer accurately tracks Distance (mi) in km/miles, calculates total Distance (mi) traveled and measures time and calories burned.

Participants can use either www.livewisely2020.org/community, Twitter at www.twitter.com/livewisely2020 or Facebook at www.facebook.com/livewisely2020 to follow up, coordinate, provide feedback, spread the word and get support.

The Motivation

Motivation is the key! Once a week you will meet with your group members for re-assessments and discussions of your weekly activities. This will give you the opportunity to see where you can make improvements in a number of areas. As the heart rate monitor tracks your activity it charts your progress.

You are not alone

Your walking partner or group will be with you every step of the way through continuous follow ups. Being accountable to someone other than yourself will greatly increase the probability of success.

Don’t worry about the difficulty of taking 10,000 steps. On a typical day most sedentary people will take somewhere around 3,000 – 5,000 steps. If that much. All it may take for you is to walk an extra mile a day and before you know it you’re there. It is that easy. Don’t think about it. Just do it.

All of the information and materials you need are enclosed! In the pages to come, you’ll find information complete with the essential materials needed to carry out your program.
